Mary Barton

Elizabeth Gaskell’s â€Å"Mary Barton† is a novel of social reform that explores injustice, abuse and inequality. The novel is especially concerned with the societal condition of England at the time. In her â€Å"Preface† Mrs. Gaskell asserted, â€Å"I know nothing of Political Economy, or the theories of the trade. I have tried to write truthfully†. The â€Å"truth† of â€Å"Mary Barton† is not political or economic but the truth of the human heart. The novel is not about industrial conditions but about people living in those conditions. Mrs. Gaskell’s social aim in writing is to inform rather than to reform. Her aim in writing is to give â€Å"utterance to the agony† and to explicate the consequences of â€Å"the seeming injustice of the inequalities of fortune†. In â€Å"Mary Barton†, the protagonist John Barton asks with bitter vehemence about the injustice of the massive gulf between the upper and lower classes: â€Å"Why are they so separate, so distinct, when God has made them all? [†¦ ] We are their slaves as long as we can work; we pile up fortunes with the sweat of our brows; and yet we are to live as separate as Dives and Lazarus, with a great gulf betwixt us†. John Barton is ultimately driven to the act of murder by his outrage at the gulf fixed between the rich and the poor. John Barton is ultimately a victim of society and an example of how a man full of human kindness is hardened into hatred and violence. As the author tells the reader his wife’s death meant that â€Å"one of the ties which bound him down to the gentle humanities of earth was loosened†. The string of events that followed – the strike, the Davenports’ starvation and fever, the employees’ arrogant isolation and the failure of the petition, seem to purposely show that the world reckons the poor folk no account. And as John Barton lies on his deathbed his enemy Mr. Carson sits in his library quite unable to hate his son’s murderer. At the end Mr. Carson forgives John Barton and the murderer dies in the arms of the man whose son he has murdered and this image explicates the novel’s pivotal theme in the hope of human heartedness. In her novel Mrs. Gaskell presents men and women at the extreme of suffering at which point only the most radical of human actions remain be they despair and hatred or alternatively human compassion and forgiveness.

How Soon Hath Time

HOW SOON HATH TIME- JOHN MILTON HOW SOON HATH TIME is a Petrarchan sonnet written by John Milton the famous English poet. It is a sonnet written on the 9th of December 1631. Typical of the Petrarchan sonnet, there is a tonal change as well as a change in the mood and emotions of the poet. The poem has an autobiographical touch. In the Octave, the poet laments the passage of 23 years of his life, especially the 23rd year. The sonnet begins with a tone of frustration and desperation. He suffers from the complex growing youngsters have. Time is pictured as a subtle thief of youth which has wings and it has carried away the 23 years of his life. His days are hurrying away in a rush. He is growing by age, but the spring of his life has seen no bud nor blossom. He fears that he has not achieved anything in his life despite crossing 23 years. In the second half of the octave, he states that though he has attained manhood, he does not look his age. He has that physical immaturity which has made him look very young and effeminate. He despairs of not only being unmasculine, but also a failure in life as a poet and also as a respectable man of high standing. Physical immaturity seems to go hand in hand with mental, psychological and intellectual immaturity. Though he is a man now, he does not have the mature looks nor does he find an inward ripeness. He feels sad that some people are so well endowed at the proper time. The word ENDOWED suddenly makes the poet realize the ‘one who endows'- God. Eventually the mood changes. There is an introspection and acceptance. He comes to terms with the reality. He feels that all he needs is time and necessarily, along with it ,the blessings of God. He would, one day, sooner or later, in a large amount or small, bless him. It is destiny, he realizes. He would indeed be blessed by God and his fortunes may change for the better. He decides to ‘stand and wait' in anticipation of the grace of God. He feels that right now, it is the destiny allotted by God and accordingly, he has to carry out his part of the duty and wait in patience. He dreams of a day when God blesses him in His own strictest measure. He would bless him with a sense of creativity so that he would bloom to be a better poet. He realizes that human beings are allotted to play their roles, to perform God's will. If he waits with patience, God's grace would be on him eternally. Sometimes less, sometimes more, it may vary, but the Almighty, the Power, would always remain up above, blessing him. So all he needs is Time, Patience and the will of Heaven. In the last line, the poet refers to God as a Taskmaster. A taskmaster's job is to extract work and God will make him strive hard so that one day he would be a greater poet; because that is what, he feels ,God intends him to be. If not today, perhaps someday, he will achieve what he dreamed of, the success he strived for and the glory he anticipated. He would certainly succeed as what he aspired to be. The sonnet ends with a tone of hope and consolation. Milton presents the same theme in ON HIS BLINDNESS. A parallel reference can be made of the lines from Shakespeare's AS YOU LIKE IT where he speaks that we are allotted to play our roles; to perform God's will. — † All the world's a stage and all men and women mere players

Sociology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 3

Sociology - Essay Example Luxuries, such as vacations and dining out, are out of reach for the minimum wage earner that earns the $6.55 per hour as prescribed by federal law (Compliance Assistance). In addition, the low wage earner is not able to save for emergencies or make any plans on financing the college education of their children. While raising the minimum wage does help reduce the hardship on the poorest workers, it is often met with political resistance that claims it costs business too much money and reduces the number of jobs available. Another practical way to raise the wages would be to increase the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This is money given to the working poor through a yearly tax credit. In addition to increasing this allowance, it could be disbursed on a monthly basis, which would help workers meet their budgetary and immediate needs. The current maximum amount that can be claimed is $4,824 with two or more qualifying children (Earned Income Tax Credit). This equates to approximately $93 per week, or an additional $2.32 per hour in a 40-hour workweek. Increasing this amount would help the low wage earner

MGT501 - Management and Organizational Behavior Mod 5 SLP Essay

MGT501 - Management and Organizational Behavior Mod 5 SLP - Essay Example That made the results of this survey quite interesting to me. Starting with leadership profile, it came out as participative or democratic. I was not too surprised with that. I have taken these a few times in the past and they usually come out that way. It is said, that good leaders use all three styles which would include authoritative and declarative and certainly I can think of times that those are useful too. However, I believe that employee buy in is very important to success and that usually shows. This seems to be the way to have a department that is always functioning at its best. There are things that I know well about the job and things they know well. There is a much better chance we will be successful as a team. My strengths are related to getting the most out of my employees by asking for and using the ideas that they have. Involving them in some of the decision making and allowing them to come up with and use good ideas make process change much easier also. I help my employees grow. This type of leadership can get out of hand if the leader is not aware when they are leaning on the employees to much. They employees must still see this person as a leader with some power. People will not follow a leader that has not power. The organizational survey answered all of my questions. It is an autocratic workplace. Wouldnt you know it? Seems to make sense that we are always out of sync now. It appears I have a good reason to look for a job in another culture which is what I have been thinking for awhile. It appears that what I believe about employees and what the organization believes are the direct opposite as they like to tell them what to do and do not seek buy in. This is pretty old fashioned in its method of driving an organization. I have been here about a year and when I interviewed, the organization presented itself quite differently. These kinds of surveys

Nacerima Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Nacerima - Essay Example Nacirema Nacirema is a community living in North America and is known to conduct weird body rites or ceremonies. These rituals are conducted at everyday basis of their lives. Due to this habit enshrined in their customs and traditions, members of the Nacirema community are necessitated to institute a separate room in their homesteads as it will enable them to conduct their body rituals clandestinely within the comfort of their houses. Each room for conducting the rituals has a designated container that is meant for storage of magical equipments and concoctions. These are believed to be of significance for existence and well being of individuals. Available sources posit that the Nacirema possess a lot of magical equipments and concoctions that sometimes render them difficult to comprehend the aim of some of them (Minner, 2002). They are only kept for the conviction and credence that they will provide safety for the members of the family. According to Brent and Lewis (2013), â€Å"Amo ng the daily rituals is revolting, which is the practice of inserting a small bundle of hog hairs into their mouth, along with magical powders, then moving the bundle around in a series of highly formalized gestures† (60). ... It is evident that a lot of customs and traditions practiced by various communities at times emerge as uninformed, irrational, and disgusting or unpleasant to other cultures. Since time immemorial, there have been debates and discussions on the ways and manners in which groups of people should view and comprehend other people’s customs and traditions. It is important to consider the fact our fascination and interest in our customs and traditions results to us viewing it as normal. When people are too much fascinated with their customs and traditions, they view it as the true and correct manner of living that should be a force to reckon with. Nanda & Warms (2007) asserts that individual members of a certain community with distinct customs and traditions, we are prone to examine and scrutinize our customs in comparison with the traditions of other communities or societies. In doing so, individuals fall short of identifying and comprehending the importance of actions and deeds as well as constituents of other customs and traditions. Why some cultures look odd In many cases, some customs and traditions practiced by various communities may seem odd to us. For instance, some customs and traditions in Africa appear odd to Americans. This is because, being a developed nation with civilized ways of life, we forget that our ways of life are different from other nations or societies. Since America is regarded as the most powerful nation in the world, we assume that other people from other countries must emulate us. Though to some extent some of our ways of life have greatly influenced others, it is difficult for some communities to completely do away with their conventional practices. Therefore, since we are so used

With manifested innate and extraordinary talents and skills, these gifted students need academic interventions that would further develop their capabilities to maximum levels. In this regard, the current essay would use two constructive and two non-constructive characteristics of the Gifted Learner from the graphic organizer and provide definitions of the characteristics and a discussion of their impact on instruction. ...
